2006 BRICK Award Application

Do Something honors young leaders for their work in the areas of community development, the environment, and health. Eligible applicants include individuals who are 25 or younger. Winners in the under-18 age category will each receive a $5,000 scholarship, as well as a $5,000 grant to be used toward continued community service. Winners in the 19-25 age bracket will each receive a $10,000 community-service grant.

Do Something is a national not-for-profit organization that inspires young people to believe that change is possible, and trains, funds, and mobilizes them to be leaders who measurably strengthen their communities. Each year, the Do Something BRICK Award honors 6 outstanding leaders age 18 and under and 3 outstanding leaders age 19-25 who use their talents to take action that measurably strengthens their local communities in the areas of community building, health, or the environment. Each of the ?18 and under? winners is awarded a $5,000 higher education scholarship and a $5,000 community grant (to be directed by the award winner to the not-for-profit organization of his or her choice). Winners in the ?19-25? category each receive a $10,000 community grant. All winners receive Pro Bono Services, and all winners attend the annual BRICK Awards Gala event in New York City, which celebrates their accomplishments. Do Something works closely with BRICK winners to generate local and national media coverage of their work, and to spotlight what young people can achieve.

CentroNia Playground Build Day


Event: Build a Playground

CentroNía@Harvard Street their new site at 1100 Harvard Street NW, has been selected to receive a brand new playground! They will be working with KaBoom!, a national nonprofit dedicated to building playgrounds around the country, and sponsor PepsiCo.

The Prep Day for the build is Wednesday, November 2nd, from 9am until 1pm.

CentroNía is a 501(3) non-profit community-based organization that provides affordable, high quality education, professional development, and family- support services to more than 1,000 low-income Latino, African American, and multiethnic children, youth, and families in the Washington, DC neighborhoods of Wards 1, 2 & 4 for almost 20 years.

Hope & A Home Needs Energetic People

Community Organizer to organize neighborhood action teams to promote affordable housing, employment, quality education and connectedness among residents in a rapidly changing neighborhood.

Office Manager to manage the Hope and A Home office, provide clerical support, and assist with the selection of families for our transitional housing program.

Development Director to plan and direct our organization's fund raising and PR efforts in conjunction with our Board of Directors and other volunteers.

Family Worker to provide weekly support to help parents achieve permanent housing, educational success, and family stability.

FLOC's Hope and A Home transitional housing program helps parents create nurturing and stable homes within the caring and loving support of a community. By setting goals and participating in the Hope and A Home community, children succeed in school, parents become financially independent, and families bring stability to their lives and move to permanent housing.

In 2005, Hope and A Home incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) agency. FLOC's board and staff worked with the dedicated Hope and A Home team and with public and private partners to ensure a smooth transition.
