A historic photo exhibition profiling African American classical scholars who made groundbreaking achievements in education at the end of the Civil War. The exhibition, titled ?12 Black Classicists,? was designed by Michele Valerie Ronnick, associate professor of classics at Wayne State University in Detroit. It is hosted at Georgetown through the support of the Office of the Provost and Department of Classics.

The exhibition highlights the lives of African American men and women who taught Greek and Latin at the college or university level and whose academic accomplishments helped pave the way for future generations of African Americans entering American universities.

American University Museum At The Katzen First Season

The American University Museum at the Katzen, Washington DC?s newest art museum, launches its first full season Oct. 21 continuing through Dec. 17 with Grand Openings, a presentation of five exhibitions featuring the under known Katzen and Watkins collections, a first-ever showing of inkblots by Bruce Conner and anonymous associates, and solo shows of nature-based art by painter-writer William Allan and sculptor Emilie Brzezinski.

An artists? reception, free and open to the public, will take place at the museum on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 5 to 8 pm at the museum, 4400 Massachusetts Ave., adjacent to Ward Circle, NW. In addition, several free gallery talks and a one-night film festival with a modest admission charge accompany the exhibitions.

The three-story, 30,000 square-foot museum and sculpture garden is part of the Katzen Arts Center, a landmark new facility named for Washington area benefactors Dr. and Mrs. Cyrus Katzen. The curving, limestone-sheathed complex, designed by local architects Einhorn, Yaffee and Prescott, also includes the 215-seat Abramson Family Recital Hall, black box studio theater, dance studio, student and faculty facilities for university art and performing arts departments, and a 550-space parking garage. It opened this past July with a 22-artist museum show.

The American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center is open from 12 noon to 5 pm Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 12 noon to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (closed Sundays and Mondays); admission is free. For more information call: 202-885- 1300.
The Katzen is on the northwest arc of Ward Circle, Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenues, N.W. (4400 Massachusetts Ave. 20016). Metered parking is available in the underground parking garage.
The nearest Metrorail stop is the Tenleytown-AU Metro (Red Line). Walk west on Nebraska Avenue (about 20 minutes) or take the M4 or N2 Metrobus to Ward Circle

CNHED Newest Staff Member Maribeth DeLorenzo





Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development (CNHED) is pleased to announce that Maribeth DeLorenzo has joined their staff as Director of Research and Advocacy. She assumes the responsibilities previously performed by Amanda Huron and is also the Director of our Center for Practical Research.

Prior to joining CNHED, Maribeth worked developing affordable housing for Mi Casa, Inc. and then Manna, Inc. She also worked in the Community Development Lending division of Freddie Mac.

Maribeth holds a B.A. from Binghamton University, an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare, with a graduate certificate in Urban Studies, at the University of Pennsylvania.

We feel very fortunate to have someone with both advanced research and practical community development skills join our staff.

M.O.M.I.E's TLC Seeks Program Coordinator/Volunteers

M.O.M.I.E?s TLC is seeking an organized, highly creative and dynamic After School Program Coordinator to help support the After School Program activities.

M.O.M.I.E?s TLC is also seeking volunteers for the fall and spring to assist with the After School Program. The After School Program takes place Mondays through Fridays from 3 pm to 6 pm at the basement of All Souls Church located in Columbia Heights.

M.O.M.I.E`s T.L.C (Mentors of Minorities in Education`s Total Learning Cis-tem) is a dynamic youth development organization that offers creative and culturally relevant after school enrichment and academic support for youth, ages 5 through 9. M.O.M.I.E's mission is to bolster educational outcomes for inner-city children by creating a transformative educational experience.

The After School Program offers a variety of activities, including meditation and self-reflection, individualized academic support, and the Great Persons Series, a series devoted to teaching children about the history and accomplishments of great minority persons. M.O.M.I.E?s T.L.C not only complements what children learn in school, but also focuses on nurturing children through a curriculum that teaches Black history and culture.
