Sponsored By: Serve DC
When: January 16, 2006

On January 16, 2006, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, Americans across the country will celebrate by honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will remember and memorialize Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities. Together, they will honor King?s legacy of tolerance, peace, and equality by meeting community needs and making the holiday ?A day ON, not a day OFF.?

The national theme for this 20th Anniversary is ?In the Spirit of Unity and Service - Remember, Celebrate! Act! This year?s service project?s focus will be centered on the homeless issue in the District of Columbia.

1779 Massachusetts Avenue NW

The National Neighborhood Coalition invites you to our Annual Meeting and a dialogue with Margery Austin Turner, the Urban Institute, and Angela Jones Hackley, DC Action for Children, on the changes underway in Washington DC?s urban core. Ms. Turner and Ms. Hackley will discuss the recently released Housing in the Nation?s Capital 2005, commissioned by the Fannie Mae Foundation and authored by Ms. Turner, which examines the impact of the region?s prosperity on the city?s housing and economic revitalization.

Speakers will discuss ways in which public policy development and advocacy can meet the growing needs of lower income families and neighborhoods in a time of rapid change.

The National Neighborhood Coalition provides common ground for the nation's leading advocates for lower- income neighborhoods. It is where national and local leaders come together to generate the resources, public policies and solution-oriented strategies that strengthen and sustain neighborhoods. NNC's broad network of more than one million members affords groups a voice in Washington, DC; opens doors to partnerships among non-profits and commercial entities; and keeps low-income problems and solutions on the agenda for key policy makers.
