Teaching for Change: New Literacy Focus Course
September 2004-June 2005
Raising the Achievement of African American Students and English Language Learners: A Focus on Literacy

In year-long course and coaching with nationally recognized educator Enid Lee, Participants will gain the theory and tools to promote reading and writing with a focus on equity.

Twenty-five educators in public, public charter, independent and parochial schools will examine the theory and become familiar with the tools to promote an equity-centered approach to the teaching of reading and writing. The program will involve a five-session series with Enid Lee (4-8 pm with dates in September, October, November, March and May).

The series will also include the use of case studies generated by participants and selected classroom observations by Enid Lee. This antiracist equity-centered approach helps teachers and administrators develop the skills, knowledge and will to create and maintain classrooms where teaching and learning result in academic rigor and a commitment to work for social justice and racial equality.

Participants will:

· Develop the skills and knowledge to recognize and value student's prior knowledge, language, culture, communal life, familial life and group history and relate these to the teaching and learning experience.

· Identify inequities in classroom and school climate and practice using tools for creating and maintaining anti-racist climates.

· Practice using tools for leveling the playing field for all learners and raising their level of achievement.

· Develop an action plan to continue with an equity-centered approach and to engage others at their worksites in reflection and action around issues of race, equity and student achievement.

Participants: We accept applications from teachers and administrators in public, public charter, independent and parochial schools in the DC metro area.

Fee: $500 (Scholarships available for DCPS teachers from a dedicated funding source.)
