Crime Emergency and Child Advocacy Publication

DC Action for Children is pleased to release a new Issues in Brief entitled "Summer 2006 Crime Wave - An Advocacy Opportunity." This new publication from DC Act presents important data about poverty and necessary services and supports, which Police Chief Charles Ramsey calls "front-end" issues to help kids succeed.

Two important pieces of data included in this publication are:
  • Of the estimated 8,960 children and youth with mental illness in the District of Columbia, only 5% will receive treatment in FY 2006.
  • Not all schools have school nurses despite the legal requirement, preventing many youth from accessing health care.

The publication of this issue brief is timely given the release of DC ACT?s first promise in the 5 Promises to Kids Campaign that Children and youth will be safe in their homes and communities.
