American Sign Language
Event: Summer Sign Language Classes

All classes are free and open to the public. There is no need to register.

Beginning Level and Advanced/Conversational Level

Georgetown Neighborhood Library located at 3260 R Street NW also offers all level classes on Saturday's from 4:00 until 5:15pm ends August 27, 2005.

Library Services to the Deaf Community (LSDC) assures that the deaf community, which consists of people with hearing disabilities, including those who use American Sign Language (ASL) and their hearing family members, who live, work, go to school, or visit, in the District of Columbia, are aware of existing library and information services within the District of Columbia Public Library System.

LSDC promotes public awareness about hearing loss, auxiliary aids and services, and deaf culture.

Community Computer Classes

Registration for beginners, INTRO, Word, Excel and Hardware courses are $25.00 each.
All other courses are $50.00
FAST TRACK includes a PC Hardware introduction, Windows, Word, Excel, and an introduction to PowerPoint, all in 8 weeks for $100.00

Byte Back is a non-profit community computer training center in Northeast Washington, DC. It provides low-cost, hands-on computer training to underserved, underskilled, and underemployed residents of the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Its goal is to help close the "Digital Divide": the gap that exists between those who have access to computers and computer training, and those who do not.

Anyone who has or will have applications or digital content that they need to share with a limited and controlled set of people outside of Georgetown
Anyone who needs or will need access to restricted applications or digital content offered by organizations outside of Georgetown.
Anyone who supports individuals that have the above requirements.

Teaching and research are most important to the works that is done at Georgetown. Increasingly these efforts requires the sharing of resources and content, and use those shared by peers, government agencies and corporations. In order to meet this need University Inforamtion Services (UIS) is preparing to launch a service that will enable these inter-institutional efforts to occur in a secure and common manner.

They are offering free legal advice and referrals from experienced immigration attorneys. Assistance in preparing immigration forms. Instructions on how to find case status on-line, in English and Spanish.

The mission of the Gilchrist Center it to provide an opportunity for all residents of Montgomery County to gain a better understanding and deeper appreciation for the variety of cultures that make up their community. To provide an open, supportive, and hospitable environment that affirms the county's multiculturalism and fosters a sense of belonging among all in their community.

KnowledgePlex and the Urban Markets Initiative will present an online discussion about the American Community Survey, a new tool that gives communities a fresh look at how they are changing. The U.S. Census Bureau developed the ACS to improve the timeliness and quality of information traditionally provided by the long form. The ACS will fill the need for more timely and reliable small geographic area data. This discussion will describe the basics of the American Community Survey, what local information it offers, and how it differs from the long form.

The presenter will be Cynthia M. Taeuber, principal of CMTaeuber & Associates. Taeuber is a research associate at the Jacob France Institute at the University of Baltimore, where she is responsible for managing and coordinating projects in the area of community statistics and data produced by federal statistical agencies.
