IONA SENIOR SERVICES is a nonprofit community organization in northwest Washington, DC dedicated to enabling older people to live with dignity and independence. IONA provides services and access to programs designed to meet the needs of seniors and their families. It is an effective working alliance of 33 churches and synagogues, 3 community-wide advisory councils, 40 professional staff and over 600 volunteers of all ages. IONA educates and advocates achieving a deeper understanding of and a strong community commitment to seniors.

Qualifications: Degree in Therapeutic recreation or other creative arts background with an understanding of the social, recreational and therapeutic needs of the elderly. Minimum two years? experience with dementia patients in addition to program management and development. Experience in a multi-disciplinary setting preferred.

Community Roundtable on Education
Event: Extreme Makeover, School Edition: How a New Approach to Education Can Fight Poverty in Washington, DC

This is the third in a series of quarterly position papers published by CFLS.

This paper examines the current state of education in the District of Columbia and suggests a variety of approaches to a new educational structure that better prepares DC residents for success as family members, citizens, workers and individuals.

At Community Family Life Services, their mission is to give people living in poverty and homelessness the tools they need to move towards permanent economic and social self-sufficiency. Not only do they offer short-term crisis assistance, but they also empower families and individuals to change their lives for the better. Their dedicated staff and volunteers provide a variety of services in the following areas: Housing Services; Supportive Services & Community Outreach; and Youth Development & Advocacy.

Job Title: AmeriCorps*VISTA/ Washington & Jefferson College Community Service Coordinator
Dates of Service: August 21, 2006- August 20, 2007 (full-time)

Position Summary: The VISTA coordinates the development of community service activities involving W&J students, student organizations, and faculty members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1) College degree or three years of volunteer-related experience
2) Strong written and oral communication skills
3) Excellent organizational and planning skills
4) Ability to self-motivate and to work independently
5) Familiarity with Microsoft Office or similar software packages
6) Experiences in and ability to work with a diverse population
