Project South Book Forum: "Teaching & Organizing for Justice (TOJ)"

Event: The Role of Religion in Caribbean History:From Amerindian Shamanism to Rastafarianism with author & activist Patrick "Pops" Hylton

Date: Thursday, November 18, 2004

Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Place: Howard University
2400 6th Street, NW
Blackburn Center Gallery Lounge -1st floor

Preview:"The conquest and colonization of the Americas, like Asia, Africa and Australia, were accomplished with the gun and the bible. Historically, religion has been used to rationalized and consolidate military conquest, preserve empires through mental enslavement of the conquered, and destroy resistance by debasing and vulgarizing the culture of the subject peoples. Those among the vanquished who refused to submit to the alien faith were treated as social outcasts and - depending on the level of effectiveness of their resistance - as outlaws. This was the role played by the culture of the European ruling classes in the Caribbean and the New World. The institution entrusted with its propagation was the Christian Church - Roman Catholicism and Protestantism."

Help the Homeless - Walk for the LAYC

Dear Friends of the LAYC:

Once again the Latin American Youth Center is participating in the 17th Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon sponsored by the Fannie Mae Foundation. For those of you who have walked before this day always promises to be fun and rewarding. If you have never participated -please do so this year and support the Latin American Youth Center's work with homeless and unaccompanied youth in our foster care, street outreach, transitional and independent living programs.

You can help in the following ways:

1. Come out and walk - you can register on line at www.helpthehomelessdc.org. You can get sponsors and create your own web page to encourage your friends, family and co-workers to come out and walk in support of the Latin American Youth Center.

2. If you can't walk - you can sponsor youth walkers from the LAYC! Your contribution will pay the registration fee for youth walkers. Contact millie at millie@layc-dc.org to discuss your contribution for LAYC youth walkers

3. You can also come out and register the day of the walk - again, remember it is important to note that you are walking in support of the Latin American Youth Center.

Our code is LAYC! LAYC's goal for this year is to raise $75,000 to support our programs! We can only reach this goal if you walk, get sponsors and support others to walk too! Thanks in advance for your support. On the day of the event LAYC will be gathering on the mall near the letter "L" of the alphabet! If you pre-register you will get a beautiful T-shirt!!!!

Looking forward to seeing you and muchas gracias! PS - circulate this to your friends who may be willing to come out and walk for the LAYC homeless youth program.

Thanks,

Lori Kaplan
LAYC Executive Director
