DC ParentSmart, an organization devoted to helping parents get the best possible education for their children, will be closing its doors. ParentSmart has served the DC community for two and a half years. The organization set up a call center to assist and advise parents, conducted outreach programs to encourage parents to become involved in their children's education, partnered with schools to increase their collaboration with parents and, with Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care, trained home visitors to help parents prepare young children for school.
ParentSmart was a Parent Information and Resource Center (PIRC) funded by the Department of Education and a program under the Center for Student Support Services. They are closing due to not receiving a renewal of the PIRC grant. Some ParentSmart services will be continued until March 2007, including the Parent Involvement Network of Coordinators (PINC) workshops. (For information on these workshops, call Erica Louison at 202-628-8848 ext 116.) ParentSmart is also committed to finding funding to keep the call center running. The new PIRC is the Multicultural Community Service at Josephine Butler Parks Center, 2437 15th St. NW. They can be contacted at info@mcsdc.org, (202) 238-9355 (phone) or (202)238-9399 (fax). Thank you to ParentSmart for all their hard work, and good luck to all involved in the transition. Hopefully the DC community can enjoyment lasting results from ParentSmart's services and be strengthened by the addition of new programs. | ||||||
