New DC Crime Mapping Website
 

Last Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police Department unveiled a new crime mapping website (crimemap.dc.gov) intended to give residents easier access to information on crimes commited in their neighborhoods and to strengthen neighborhood policing efforts. Users can enter an address or other geographic location and view a map of the crimes that occurred within a radius of up to 1500 feet within the past year. Unfortunately, the website only works with Internet Explorer.
Housing for the Homeless Workshop--Last Day to Register!!

A workshop sponsored by Beyond Shelter on the Housing First approach, which focuses on helping homeless individuals and families get and keep housing. The workshop's focus is on implementation strategies for practitioners who are operating or interested in developing a Housing First program.

There is a workshop fee of $300.

Panel Discussion on "The New Nonprofit Workforce"

The last of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement's Ideas to Dialogue panel discussions. This panel focuses on the rising number of nonprofit undergraduate and master's programs and the impact this will have the nonprofit workforce. Registration is $25 for Center members and $30 for others.

Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Conference

The Bringing Theory to Practice Project invites college and university students to attend its second annual student conference: Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. The Student Conference is designed to encourage college students to reflect upon their own attitudes and leadership abilities within the areas of engaged and service learning. A series of interactive presentations and discussions will provide students with tools to help them grow as both leaders and students as well as inspire them to continue their service activities after graduation.

The Student Civic Engagement Conference Track is sponsored by the Charles Engelhard Foundation of New York City and is offered in partnership with the Association of American Colleges and Universities. The BTtoP Project is committed to exploring and advocating the academic community's interest, support and valuing of engaged student learning and its relationship to the mental health and civic development of individuals and their communities.

Help the Homeless Walkathon - Participate or Volunteer
 
Event: 2006 Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon
When: Saturday, November 18, starting at 7:00am
Where: National Mall (Smithsonian metro station)

The 19th annual walkathon to support organizations that work to help the homeless and end homelessness, with honorary chair singer and songwriter Jewel. Pregister online by November 12 and save $5 on the registration fee (over age 25 only). Beneficiary organizations can recruit walkers and receive up to $25,000 in incentive awards. The Fannie Mae Foundation is also looking for volunteers to help out on the night of Friday, November 17 and on the morning of the 18th.

DC Education Program's Regional Spelling Bee
 
Event: Higher Achievement Program 3rd Annual Regional Spelling Bee
When: Wednesday, November 15, 6:00-8:30 pm
Where: Kelly Miller Middle School, 301 49th Street NE (off of East Capitol Street, within walking distance of the Benning Road station on the blue line)

Students from the DC area Higher Achievement Program, a high school preparatory program for gifted middle schoolers from underserved areas, face off in a contest of orthographical skills! Anyone interested in DC public education is encouraged to attend this event. RSVP to rsvp@higherachievement.org by November 12.*

Funding Opportunities
 

The Department of Mental Health is interested in funding a training program in partnership with the Psychology Department of a medical school in the District of Columbia, focusing on psychiatric treatment of persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders. $120,000 of funds are available. The deadline for applications is November 10.

The Toyota USA Foundation provides funding for tax exempt institutions, including universities and non-profit organizations, that are working to improve pre-college math and science education. The application deadline for the coming year is January 1, 2007.

Relatives as Parents Program: The Brookdale Foundation is looking to fund the development or expansion of services for relatives who have taken on parenting responsibities. Awards up to $10,000 are available. The application deadline for organizations is January 11, 2007.
