Space for affordable housing near stadium
 

The Examiner reported on Friday that the Metro Board of Directors recently approved a development package for the Navy Yard Station, the nearest to the new baseball stadium. In addition to providing for renovation of the station entrance and construction of an office building above it, the package also included a 450-unit residental and retail development, with the requirement that the DC government be allowed to purchase up to 20% of the units for affordable housing.

8th Annual Public-Private Conference
 

Event: "Moving Forward: Continued Commitment to Building Partnerships" - 8th Annual Public-Private Conference
When: Monday, October 30, 8:00am-4:30pm
Where: George Washington University, Cloyd Heck Marvin Center, 800 21st Street, NW

A conference held by the Office of Partnerships and Grants Development (OPGD), in partnership with Citibank, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement and the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, bringing together nonprofit and faith-based organizations, foundations and corporations, educational insitutions and local and federal government, featuring workshops on grants, cooperation between the public and private sectors and fund raising.

Registration is $55 by October 24, or $75 afterwards. Nonprofit organizations can also receive exhibit space and other perks with a contribution of $100.

Fairfax VolunteerFest: Regionwide community service day on Saturday, October 28, organized by Volunteer Fairfax to mobilize volunteers to lend a hand at local organizations. The Building Futures for Youth Project at Howard University has three stipend volunteer positions open for college students to work with their afterschool service learning program BFY Club SERVE at three DC Public School sites. Interns will help 6th and 7th grade students in a DC Public School learn about community service and service learning and can earn a $1000 stipend for volunteering 3 evenings a week (T/W/TH), 3pm-6pm, from November 2006 to the end of May 2007. The DC Parks and Recreation Lifeguard Academy is now taking applications from DC residents ages 15 - 24. The Lifeguard Academy has three components, the Youth Leadership Development Workshop, Pre Lifeguard Conditioning classes, and American Red Cross Lifeguard training. Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Conference

The Bringing Theory to Practice Project invites college and university students to attend its second annual student conference: Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. The Student Conference is designed to encourage college students to reflect upon their own attitudes and leadership abilities within the areas of engaged and service learning. A series of interactive presentations and discussions will provide students with tools to help them grow as both leaders and students as well as inspire them to continue their service activities after graduation.

The Student Civic Engagement Conference Track is sponsored by the Charles Engelhard Foundation of New York City and is offered in partnership with the Association of American Colleges and Universities. The BTtoP Project is committed to exploring and advocating the academic community's interest, support and valuing of engaged student learning and its relationship to the mental health and civic development of individuals and their communities.

Grantseeker Workshops for Spanish Speakers

The Foundation Center is offering two workshops in Spanish, "Grantseeking Basics" and "Proposal Writing Basics," for representatives of organizations serving Latino Communities. The training session is free, and attendees will also receive a free copy of the book Guía para escribir propuestas.

Brick Awards - "The Oscars of youth service awards"
 
Are you, or do you know, someone under 25 who has taken the initiative to make a difference in their community? The Brick Awards, called "the Oscars of youth service awards" by CNN, offer up to $25,000 in scholarships and/or support for service projects for young Social Entrepreneurs and Community Leaders. The deadline for applications is December 1.

Funding Opportunities
 

Through the Consolidated Health Center Program, the Department of Health and Human Services is funding new sites providing primary and preventative health care services to underserved populations. $61 million is available to fund 102 awards. The Lumina Foundation offers support for programs helping traditionally underserved student groups access and complete postsecondary education. Grants for 2007 will be considered at the beginning of the 2007 fiscal year.

The Public Welfare Foundation is offering funds for programs working to improve the delivery of basic services to disadvantaged populations, particularly in the areas of community development, criminal justice, youth, environment, health, human rights and global security. Awards ranging from $10.000 to $50,000 are available.
