The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) invites applications for the position of Coordinator for Service and Volunteerism.

The Coordinator for Service and Volunteerism works within the Center for Civic Engagement and Service- Learning to provide support to Volunteer Southern Maryland and to the College of Southern Maryland service-learning program. Specifically, this individual (1) independently develops a comprehensive fund development strategy for Volunteer Southern Maryland; (2) cultivates partnerships with local nonprofit organizations; (3) supports co-curricular community-based learning by advising students on community involvement opportunities and provides opportunities for student leadership through the student-led Service-Learning Institute; (4) designs and implements a reflection series for students involved in service-learning courses and in co- curricular programs facilitated by community partners; and 5) assists departments and faculty teaching courses throughout the College of Southern Maryland campuses with community-based learning components.

One of sixteen community colleges within Maryland public higher education, CSM is a mid-sized, comprehensive, regional community college located southeast of Washington DC.

DC Urban Arts Academy Open House
Event: 5th Annual DC Hip Hop Festival
When: July 15, 2006
Where: Benning Park Recreation
Cost: Free

Participate in the WBL Urban Arts Academy Open House as part of the 5th Annual DC Hip-hop Theatre Festivalon. This event is intended for families. If you have children you would be interested in enrolling, please bring them to participate in our daylong activities. For those who are kids at heart, the workshops will also be open to adults also. Come early because food tickets will be provided to the first 100 people to arrive.

Words Beats and Life Inc exists to develop and support a community of young artists by providing consistent artistic instruction for DC youth. WBL exists to provide information, opportunity and resources to under served youth and artists. WBL was conceptualized in 2002 upon completion of the second annual WBL hip-hop conference at the University of Maryland. Conference planners saw the potential utilization of hip-hop culture as a vehicle to engage youth in meaningful dialogue and direct action, offering an alternative to violence and crime.

Funding for Community-Based Research

The Sociological Initiatives Foundation provides grants of $5,000 to $15,000 to support community- based research projects. Areas of interest include but are not limited to social justice, social welfare, human rights, literacy, language learning and use, dialect use and curricular issues in teaching second languages and non-native languages.

Recruitment for 2006-07 Mentoring Program
Event: College Bound Volunteers

When: September 06 through May 07

College Bound is currently recruiting volunteers for the 2006-2007 Academic Mentoring Program to work with our 8-12th grade students. We are looking to fill slots for 50-70 volunteers. If you know of someone who might be interested, please pass this information along to them.

College Bound is a non-profit organization that works with students in grades 8-12, who are enrolled in public and public charter schools in the D.C. metropolitan area. They work to prepare students to enter college, earn a degree, and achieve their personal and professional goals. Their Academic Mentoring Program matches one volunteer, which we refer to as a "partner," with one student that s/he works with weekly.

The Commitment:

-2 hours a week for 9 months (September through May)
-Once a month mentoring activity
All meetings take place at one of our site locations between 6-8:30 (check website for exact times locations). During the site meetings, partners help students with:
-math and language arts through our curriculum (ALL STUDENTS)
-homework (ALL STUDENTS)
-SAT preparation (11-12th) and
-college and scholarship research (11-12th)
