Positions: Development Asst. & Grants Manager/Development Associate

Title and Description: Development Assistant (#5104) The incumbent is responsible for ensuring administrative aspects of Development office are carried out in a timely and professional manner. Responsible for weekly Development office related duties. Develop drafts of monthly thank you letters and ensuring all thank you correspondences get out in a timely manner. File and maintain database on donors to CHW. Provide research and database assistance to Major Gifts Officer and Grants Manager. Provide primary support for the CHW Walker and Corporate Campaigns to raise money through the Help the Homeless Walkathon. Determine schedule of Executive Director, Development Director, staff and volunteers for making presentations to government and businesses as part of the United Way/CFC Campaign. Prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence and ensure each mailing is sent out within agency time limits. Maintain individual donor files. Provide primary support to Major Gifts Officer in the research, input and maintenance of individual and major giving donor information. Continually update and correct donor database records. Generate monthly fundraising and other database reports as needed. Work with Program Staff to develop and PowerPoint presentations to funders. Maintain guest lists, gather and prepare materials for fund and friend-raising special events. Assist Development and Communications teams with information related to the Annual report and other communication materials. Work closely with Grants Manager/Development Associate on annual corporate and church community campaigns. Provide research assistance to Grants Manager. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Associates or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience: A minimum of three years experience in an administrative position, preferably in a nonprofit development office.
Knowledge: Computer literacy. Proficient in Windows environment. Knowledge of Paradigm and Raiser?s Edge software or other similar resource development database applications helpful. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and adobe applications. Excellent organizational, management and interpersonal skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent problem solving skills. Ability to work effectively with a range or staff with a variety of interests and backgrounds. Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Title and Description: Grants Manager/Development Associate (#5103) The incumbent is responsible for the development and production of grants and contract proposals to federal agencies, corporations, and foundations. Responsible for identifying new sources of funding and sustaining relationships with current funders. Work collaboratively with program directors to identify and develop proposals. Ensure efficient grants acquisition, implementation, and renewal process. Lead development of system to integrate development and finance protocol for grants. Implement and supervise agency-wide comprehensive grants management system to ensure deadlines, outcomes, and deliverables are all achieved. Assist development department in annual corporate, United Way, and religious community campaigns. Work with development staff to ensure all activities are performed in a manner that reflects the mission, philosophy and policies of Covenant House. Oversee research of corporations and foundation prospects and ensure development of proposals for submission to appropriate prospects. Research funding opportunities that align with the CHW strategic plan. Develop a balance of program and general operating support funding streams. Attend program staff meetings to provide information on grant opportunities and to discuss process for application. Identify opportunities and develop proposals for submission to district and federal government agencies for services consistent with the CH Mission and Vision for presentation to program staff and lead development of proposals from RFP announcement through submission. Communicate with staff to ensure all proposal deadlines are met and that each proposal is of the highest quality. Coordinate program staff for preparation of reports to funders and production of reports according to guidelines. Prepare staff for funder meetings and cultivate relationships with program staff at foundations and partner organizations. Monitor proposal deadlines, prepare and edit proposals including narratives, budget, and supporting documentation, and manage proposal submissions. Manage database of grants submitted and received, as well as reporting requirements. Ensure that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful corporate, government, and foundation relationships. Develop a calendar of future funding opportunities and renewal grants. Assist Development and Communications teams with information related to the Annual report and other communication materials. Work closely with Development Assistant on annual corporate and church community campaigns. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience:One to three years progressively responsible experience in the field of development with a focus on grants management. Experience in government, corporate, foundation and major donor solicitation. Experience writing grant proposals.

DC Organizing Initiative
Event: ONE DC Community Organizing & Pop Ed Initiative
When: June 5-9, 2006 (8hrs a day)
Deadline: Friday, May 5, 2006. Applicants will be notified by by May 10, 2006

ONE DC proposes to develop a three year pilot initiative that will train local organizers through an intensive institute and year-round technical support. Additionally, in years 2-3, ONE DC will develop more intensive technical assistance relationships with local organizations to increase their capacity to integrate organizers and organizing into their organizational culture and workplan. Simultaneously, ONE DC will develop relationships in the funding and evaluation community to demonstrate the impact of this work on the District?s neighborhoods, and to create more sustainable funding streams for organizing in the District.

The mission of ONE DC is to exercise political strength to create and preserve racial and economic equity in Shaw and the District. Using a progressive framework of grassroots-led policy change and consciousness raising for systemic transformation, ONE DC seeks to strengthen movement building at the local, regional and national level.

Presentation of the students research projects that they have been jointly developing in a community showcase at Nicholas Orem Middle school. "Community Enrichment" brought 75 freshmen from the University of Maryland's College Park Scholars Public Leadership Program together with 75 students at Nicholas Orem Middle School to develop research projects about critical issues facing the Prince George's County and Hyattsville communities. By working together in pairs and small groups, the students used their skills and creativity to tackle issues like desegregation, diversity, and recycling. This year long (two-semester project) took place weekly after-school and generated one final project per group that will entertain, inform, or educate local residents and community members about issues and assets relevant to the growth and development of the entire community. Examples of final projects to be presented include original music, a talent show, a mural design, and a photo essay.
